Delay Repay with Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast pays Delay Repay when your journey is 15 minutes or more late at your destination. You claim on Avanti's own site within 28 days, and Advance tickets bought from Avanti can be claimed for you automatically.

At a glance

  • Pays from: 15 minutes late at your destination, against the timetable on the day.
  • Claim within: 28 days of the affected journey.
  • Where: avantiwestcoast.co.uk, Delay Repay. Online needs an account. A paper form goes to Freepost AVANTI WEST COAST DELAY REPAY.
  • Automatic: Automated Delay Repay for Advance tickets booked direct, if you opt in by the day of travel.

How much

Singles and returns are a share of the whole ticket price. The delay is how late you arrived at your destination, not how late you set off. You never get back more than you paid, and the most any claim pays is a full day's travel.

Season tickets

Avanti values a season by how many single journeys it covers: the price divided by 10 for a weekly, 40 for a monthly, 120 for a quarterly, 240 for a six-monthly and 464 for an annual. Its Passenger's Charter adds 16 for a flexi season. You can save your season in your Delay Repay account for later claims. Under a do not travel warning, season holders claim through Delay Repay.

How to claim

Online, create an account on Avanti's Delay Repay portal and submit the claim. Tickets bought from another company can be claimed the same way. Enter the train you meant to catch, not the one you took because of the delay.

The paper form is on Avanti's site and at stations. Hand it to staff or post it free to Freepost AVANTI WEST COAST DELAY REPAY; Avanti suggests recorded delivery. Paper claims take up to 20 working days.

What the form asks for

Online claims: card payment, bank transfer, cheque or National Rail Travel Vouchers. Postal claims: cheque or vouchers only.

Automated Delay Repay

Advance tickets booked on Avanti's website or app, for a journey with at least one Avanti train, can be claimed automatically. Create a Delay Repay account with the same email as your Avanti account and opt in no later than the day you travel. When Avanti finds a delay of 15 minutes or more, it raises the claim, usually within 24 hours, and emails you to confirm. Payment then takes up to five working days. If no email comes within 48 hours, claim yourself.

Cancelled trains and missed connections

If your train was cancelled, Avanti works out the next train that would have got you there. If the cancellation made you 15 minutes or more late, claim from the company whose train was cancelled. If you did not travel, get a full refund from wherever you bought the ticket.

When an Avanti train made you late, Avanti counts the whole journey on your ticket, connections included. It only deals with claims it caused first, and passes the rest to the company that did.

Worth knowing

Platted keeps the record for you

Platted keeps every journey you take with it for 13 months, with what a claim form asks for: the date, the stations, the booked and actual times, how late, why, and the operator. Each one copies with a tap. When a train arrives late enough to claim, Platted tells you once, then once more a week before the window shuts.

You claim on the operator's own site. Platted does not claim for you, sends the operator nothing and takes nothing from what you are paid.
