Delay compensation with Merseyrail
Merseyrail does not use Delay Repay. Its Passenger Charter pays compensation from 30 minutes late on its Northern and Wirral lines, and for a single ticket it pays the whole fare back. Claim within 28 days of the delay.
At a glance
- Pays from: 30 minutes late.
- Claim within: 28 days of the delay, per Merseyrail's claim form.
- Where: Merseyrail help centre, compensation, through its online claim form, or a paper form.
How much
| Ticket and delay | What Merseyrail pays |
|---|---|
| Single, 30 minutes or more | The whole fare |
| Return, 30 minutes or more | Half the fare |
| Weekly tickets, 30 minutes or more | 20% of the ticket, one claim per ticket |
| A ticket covering other lines or companies, delayed on Merseyrail | 20% of the ticket |
| Monthly and annual seasons, Trio, Railpass | 5% or 10% of the price, if Merseyrail's performance fell short over the ticket's life |
Season compensation depends on how well the whole network ran while your ticket was valid, so you claim after it expires. Merseyrail's pages give the thresholds slightly differently, so its charter is the one to check.
How to claim
Use the delay compensation claim form in Merseyrail's help centre. Or fill in a paper comments form and post it to Freepost MERSEYRAIL CUSTOMER RELATIONS, hand it in at a staffed station, or call 0151 555 1111. For a paper season, use the season ticket refund form, or take the expired ticket to a staffed station.
Send a photo of your ticket, and keep the original: Merseyrail may ask for it by post, and a claim is rejected if the ticket has been thrown away.
How you are paid
The same way you paid for the ticket, unless you agree another method. The paper form also offers a travel voucher, and some payments come as a bank transfer link that lasts 30 days.
Cancelled trains
A delay or a cancellation that gets you to your destination 30 minutes or more late counts. If you decide not to travel because your train was delayed or cancelled, you get a full refund with no admin fee, from the ticket office where you bought it or through the online form. You cannot have both a refund and compensation for the same journey.
Worth knowing
- Compensation is based on the timetable in force on the day, including a replacement timetable. Delays on rail replacement buses can count.
- On strike days, monthly and annual season and Railpass holders who could not travel can claim a day's refund within 28 days.
- To contest a refusal, call 0151 555 1111 or email [email protected].
Platted keeps the record for you
Platted keeps every journey you take with it for 13 months, with what a claim form asks for: the date, the stations, the booked and actual times, how late, why, and the operator. Each one copies with a tap. When a train arrives late enough to claim, Platted tells you once, then once more a week before the window shuts.
You claim on the operator's own site. Platted does not claim for you, sends the operator nothing and takes nothing from what you are paid.
