How much
| Late by | Single | Return | Season | Flexi season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 to 29 minutes | 25% | 12.5% | 25% of one journey | 12.5% of one journey |
| 30 to 59 minutes | 50% | 25% | 50% of one journey | 25% of one journey |
| 60 to 119 minutes | 100% | 50% | 100% of one journey | 50% of one journey |
| 2 hours or more | 100% | 100% | 100% of one journey | 100% of one journey |
Singles and returns are a share of what the ticket cost. For seasons, one journey is the price divided by 10 for a weekly, 40 for a monthly and 464 for an annual. A flexi season is its price divided by 8. So a £100 weekly season is £10 a journey, and a 20 minute delay pays £2.50.

|---|---|
| 15 to 29 minutes | None |
| 30 to 59 minutes | 1 single |
| 60 to 119 minutes | 1 return |

From 30 minutes you can take free tickets for Northern trains instead of money, season holders included. If you are delayed an hour or more while using a free ticket, Northern replaces it.
How to claim
Claim online on Northern's Delay Repay site, or collect a paper form at a Northern station, or download it, and post it to Freepost Northernrailway. Northern emails a claim reference, aims to review a claim within 5 working days and to settle it within 10, or 20 at busy times.
What the form asks for
- Full names and address.
- The date and time, and the whole journey, not just the part that was late.
- Images of every ticket you used, or your smartcard number. At a ticket barrier, keep your ticket and ask the attendant to let you through.
- How long the delay was, and how you want to be paid.
How you are paid
Bank transfer to a UK account, a UK debit or credit card, a NatWest PayIt payment, Rail Travel Vouchers, a free Northern ticket, a cashable voucher worth up to £50, or a donation to Samaritans.
Automated Delay Repay
If you booked an Advance ticket for a particular train on Northern's website or app, Northern works out the compensation and emails you. Log in to your Delay Repay account and accept it with one click; it is normally paid within 5 working days. Register with the same email you buy tickets with. It does not apply if that train was cancelled: claim in the usual way instead.
Cancelled trains and missed connections
A cancellation counts when it makes you arrive 15 minutes or more late, including when you finished the journey on transport Northern provided. Northern pays only when a Northern train caused the first delay. If you bought from Northern but another company's train made you late, claim from that company.
If a claim is refused
Northern emails the reason. With a Delay Repay account you appeal from the account. Without one, or if another operator passed your claim to Northern, email [email protected] or call 0800 200 60 60.
Platted keeps the record for you
Platted keeps every journey you take with it for 13 months, with what a claim form asks for: the date, the stations, the booked and actual times, how late, why, and the operator. Each one copies with a tap. When a train arrives late enough to claim, Platted tells you once, then once more a week before the window shuts.
You claim on the operator's own site. Platted does not claim for you, sends the operator nothing and takes nothing from what you are paid.
