Delay Repay with LNER

LNER pays Delay Repay from 30 minutes late at your destination, not 15 like most operators. You claim on LNER's own site within 28 days of travel, wherever you bought the ticket, and Advance eTickets booked with LNER can be claimed with one click.

At a glance

  • Pays from: 30 minutes late at your destination on an LNER train.
  • Claim within: 28 days of travel.
  • Where: lner.co.uk, Delay Repay, for tickets bought from LNER or anyone else.
  • One click: for LNER Advance eTickets booked on LNER's website or app, once you opt in.

How much

For a return, LNER pays on the outward or return half, whichever was late, until two hours, when the whole return comes back. Two Advance singles that make a round trip are not a return: only the one you were delayed on counts. The most you get is the full price of the ticket you were delayed on.

Season tickets

LNER's Passenger's Charter values one journey at the price divided by 10 for a weekly, 16 for a flexi, 40 for a monthly, 120 for a quarterly and 464 for an annual, and applies the bands to that. Claim for a weekly once it has expired, and send a copy of a monthly or longer season. It does not say what two hours pays on a season, so ask LNER.

How to claim

Use the online form on LNER's Delay Repay page. It asks for your ticket (eTicket, paper or smartcard), your email and phone number, and the ticket format and type, including split tickets and rovers, and whether you bought a Seat Frog upgrade. The charter also names the LNER app and a Freepost paper form from stations.

One-click Delay Repay

If you booked an LNER Advance eTicket on LNER's website or app, travelled on an LNER train and opted in under My Account, LNER emails you a claim link within 30 minutes of a qualifying delay. Click it, and LNER says it pays within 3 to 5 days.

The form offers its payment options at the end, and you can choose to donate the money to CALM, LNER's charity partner.

Cancelled trains and missed connections

A cancellation counts when it makes you 30 minutes or more late at your destination. If your train was cancelled and you did not travel, get a refund from wherever you bought the ticket. If you take an earlier train that runs normally, there is nothing to claim.

If an LNER delay made you miss another company's train, your ticket is valid on that company's next train. With a combination of tickets LNER compensates the whole journey, and if another company caused the delay, LNER passes your claim on and tells you.

Worth knowing

Platted keeps the record for you

Platted keeps every journey you take with it for 13 months, with what a claim form asks for: the date, the stations, the booked and actual times, how late, why, and the operator. Each one copies with a tap. When a train arrives late enough to claim, Platted tells you once, then once more a week before the window shuts.

You claim on the operator's own site. Platted does not claim for you, sends the operator nothing and takes nothing from what you are paid.
